DATUK N. Mohandas may be a national hero having scaled Mountain Everest 14 years ago, but in his day-to-day life, he has to contend with real-life issues like spending thriftily and setting aside a nest egg.

His climb up the world’s highest mountain with teacher M. Magendran was a financially-taxing affair and he had to scrimp and save everything he could and, at the same time, try to get as many sponsorships as possible.

To make every ringgit count, he pointed out that he first had to understand the kind of lifestyle he was leading. “Does my lifestyle match what I’m earning? What are the monthly bills and other expenses I need to take care of? Once these are identified, it makes it easier for me to know how much I can set aside for savings,” said the 49-year-old. Mohandas said while some may find it challenging to allocate funds for savings, there are ways to manage cost efficiency.

As account manager with Shell Malaysia, he is in a position to talk about one such way. “We (at Shell) educate motorists on fuel efficiency and savings. People pump fuel every day. Fuel is something we cannot avoid once we own a car. “Shell Malaysia recently flagged off a nationwide campaign, Shell FuelSave 95 Tow Mobiles, to educate fellow Malaysians on how to be smarter fuel savers.

“It’s as simple as choosing the right fuel and making simple changes to driving habits. Shell FuelSave 95 is a lifestyle enabler which helps you stretch your ringgit,” said Mohandas.

He listed the following as his most relevant quick and simple ways to save fuel and money:

1. Fuel matters: Shell, according to Mohandas, helps you to stretch your ringgit further, thanks to its constant research on how to improve efficiency with its fuels.

2. Service your car regularly: A poorly-maintained engine can increase your fuel consumption by up to 50%.

3. Drive smoothly: Avoid accelerating or braking too hard and try to keep your steering even.

4. Check the air in your tyres regularly: If your tyres are under- inflated by just 1psi, your fuel efficiency can be reduced by up to 3%.

5. Keep the windows closed: Wind blowing through an open window slows you down. Use your car’s internal ventilation system instead of the air conditioning.

6. Avoid excess idling: It burns fuel.

7. Avoid carrying excess weight: For every extra 45kg you carry in your car, your fuel efficiency can drop by 1% to 2%. So take those golf clubs and sporting gear out of your car if you are not using them immediately.

Mohandas said these tips have proven to be cost-efficient. “(In fact) Shell FuelSave’s save up to 1 litre per tank (campaign) was demonstrated to be achievable under real-life scenarios with real roads and real drivers,” he said.

Asked whether he shares his savings tips with his wife and three sons, Mohandas said: “Yes, simply because these tips really do help manage one’s finances.” Share this news:
