THE BIRTH OF THE ORGANISATION

AND IT’S 48 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENT - 1956 to 2004
(First Registered in 1958, No.814 (Selangor) 29/9/70)

By R.C. Ramakrishna
Young energetic Malayan youth were trained at the Outward Bound School, Lumut as early as 1954/55. During the year 1955 through the effort of 8 young trained youth ex-trainees who had training from the Outward Bound School (OBS); Lumut used their experiences and started off outdoor activities in a small way by trekking and mountain climbing. These and more youths got together and started their own outdoor club – “Malayan Outward Bound Old Boy’s Association” with the encouragement of our founder President Mr. A. Dhanapragasam, AMN, PK. The Old Boy’s Association of the Outward Bound School was brought into being eventually with the blessings of the Outward Bound Trust of Malaya and the Outward Bound School, Lumut, Malaysia to form the association.

The First Pro-tem Committee Members of the Association met at the Police Volunteer Reserve (PVR) Officers Mess at the Galloway Navy Army Air force Institute Club (NAAFI) in 1956 to draw up the constitution. After meticulous study by the Pro-tem Committee, an Inaugural Meeting was called and the meeting was declared open by the Honourable Tun Haji Abdul Razak bin Haji Hussein who was also the President of the OBT at the British Council where more than 100 ex-trainees of the Outward Bound School attended the meeting. The guest speakers were Honourable Minister Tun Leong Yew Koh also MCA President, Brigadier H.K. Dimoline and Chairman OBT Mr. I.P. Bruce. At the Inaugural Meeting after accepting the constitution, the following Principal office bearers were elected:

Chairman: Mr. A. Dhanapragasam,
Secretary: Mr. Ooi Cheng Eng,
Treasurer: Mr. M. Senathirajah.
Our objectives were not only mountain climbing and outdoor activities but to:
a)      To create, stimulate and promote interest in the young as well as old people to deeper knowledge and appreciation of Outward Bound;
b)      To explore and venture by land and or by sea and to organise, establish form or maintain work camps, camps, leadership courses, hiking, excursions, expeditions, in small or large parties for any duration and promote, manage finance and or assist any school, recreation centres. Youth organisations, voluntary units, camps, clubs and other or similar organisations having the same objects;
c)      To take active part in any welfare work and assist in any relief duty or fund during emergency or otherwise.
d)      To co-operate and or affiliate with any Outward Bound organisations or school and or Adventurers Associations, Government and non-Government Clubs, Association.
e)      To train and develop good citizens, cultivate community services, integrate the various race, religions together, loyalty, self respect, self-reliance and through fullness for others.
Our constitution was approved by the Registrar of Societies Act during 1958 and we were the only registered organisation involved with outdoor activities during the late 50’s.

As Alumni from OBS we feel proud when we meet ex-trainees of the Outward Bound School who join us as members and later venture out and open up new Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) or revive other existing organisations. Many have become leaders of these organisations. We all meet up as a big family during seminars, meetings, and conferences. The whole world is made up of ex-trainees from OBS and MOBYA.
Membership of the association increased during the years and the Outward Bound School had been very helpful in providing us with the latest list of the ex-trainees. We grew stronger and bigger. We opened up State Branches in Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Johore and Pahang.
